Cecilia sat quietly, her hands in her lap. Her mind whirled with the thought of what was going on downstairs, but she tried to listen to her mother prattle on about the Mormonts, the estate, and her plans for the future.

“I can see little that needs to change outside, although the grounds seem far too open to be wasted on walks alone. Why do they not situate a small fish pond in the back rose garden? But never to worry. We shall have quite a beautiful life here, dear.”

Cecilia felt her mother’s gaze on her face, and winced inwardly at the question she knew was coming.
